The children performed the heartwarming song at their wedding reception at The Waterside Hotel, West Kilbride – leaving a stunned Katy, and guests, with tears in their eyes.
In the video Lee makes a passionate
speech in which he says that he is 'punching above his weight' with his new
wife.
He said: 'It's absolutely true. So, what I thought I'd do - rather than taking the perspective of everyone here - I showed the kids I teach a picture of you and I got them to describe how you look.
'So in their words, and I quote,
"10 out of 10", "very pretty", "solid 10",
"emoji heart eyes", "speechless",
"breath-taking", "she looks like a famous actress",
"beautiful" and "she's good at her make-up".'
The groom continues: 'I'd like to give you your first present today as Katy McDowall, so I've written a wee song.
'I can't sing, but I work with a lot
of little people who can sing.'
At this moment the sliding doors
behind the guests open to reveal Lee's entire class. Lee begins to play the
guitar as Katy wells up.
At the end of the song the
congregation give the class a standing ovation, including Katy who is clearly
moved by the display.
Lee said about the emotional
display: 'It wasn't long after we got engaged that I started thinking of the
idea of having the children sing at our wedding.
'I wasn't quite sure how, but it
just evolved into what happened on the day.
'Everyone was blown away. I looked
out to a sea of happy tears, beaming smiles and big cheers. It was such a
magical moment, I'll never forget it.
'Everyone has been so complimentary,
the reaction has been fantastic.
'Even the children are still on a
high from their special guest performance and want to talk about it in school
and tell their classmates.
'It was a secret kept from everyone,
nobody at our wedding knew of it.
'The only folk who knew of it were
obviously the staff at The Waterside who did a great job with helping with the
surprise and our photographer and videographer.
'Some teachers from my school knew
and the children did a sterling job of keeping it a secret as well.'
It was not the first time that
primary school teacher Lee had shown his romantic side – with Katy revealing
that he had previously written her a song for his proposal.
Thrilled Katy, a communications
delivery consultant, said: 'Lee took me to Loch Fyne for a surprise weekend.
Just before we went for dinner he said he had a surprise for me.
He sat me down, blindfolded me and put headphones on. He'd recorded me a beautiful song and the last line was 'will you marry me?'.
'I took off the blindfold and he had
filled the room with roses and was down on one knee.
'I'm one lucky lady. I walked down
the aisle to an instrumental version of the song.
'I couldn't believe it – the kids
were amazing. Their singing was beautiful and they looked so excited.
'I was blown away by the fact that
they had come along on during their school holidays and all the hard work
they'd put into preparing. It shows just how much they think of Lee.'
Lee admitted he was hugely relieved after completing the song and that he was immensely proud of his pupils.
He added: 'It took me a while to
write the song. I went through maybe three or four ideas for songs, but I
wasn't happy with them so they were scrapped.
'Once I came up with an idea that I
liked, I ran it past the choir and they loved it so I developed it from there
and added and edited as the choir were learning it.
'The reaction has been wonderful, so
many nice people have been in touch with some lovely messages. We have been
completely overwhelmed.
'I was extremely nervous. It was a year or so of planning falling into place, I just had to trust that everything was running to plan and that the children would be stood behind the glass partition as it opened.
'The children were an absolute
credit to themselves and they really did me proud, they gave up a day of their
summer holidays to sing at our wedding in their school uniform, I really cannot
thank them enough.
'Obviously the parents and carers of
the children and staff at the school played a massive part in it and have been
incredibly supportive as well, for which I'm very grateful.'
